network cable certifications

For fiber optics, a simple visual fault locator (VFL) can serve as a verification tool, as it checks the continuity of a fiber optic connection to help locate breaks, connectors, and splices. It also makes it possible to verify the correct polarity and orientation of optical fibers within multi-fiber connectors.

While checking is great for troubleshooting and is really the first line of defense in finding wiring problems, more extensive wiring testing requires more than just checking. Therefore, it is rarely the only method used, unless you are testing voice-only POTS (Ordinary Telephone Service) applications running over simple telephone grade cables such as Category 3.

Verification tests will therefore not be sufficient to verify the ability of the cabling to support specific applications. Nor will they be sufficient to ensure compliance with the standards required to obtain a manufacturer's warranty.
