Multipair copper cables are used on the historical copper local loop (BLC). They support switched telephony (switched telephone network, PSTN) and xDSL links (digital multiplexing). This network allows low and high speed (HD) connections.

Optical cables (single-mode) are used on FTTH (fiber to the home) type networks and networks constituting the mutualized optical local loop. They allow very high speed connections (THD).

Copper cables and optical cables are used together on hybrid networks of the NRAxy type (high-speed subscriber connection node), and of the FTTx type (copper-terminated optical network).
